Opportunity:
My organization has a foundational training course for newly hired counselors which covers the fundamental processes of the agency. Trainees are expected to participate in presentations and learning activities to obtain new knowledge, and they are tested at the end of each module (10 in total) so that trainers can review their progress. The foundational trainers requested an additional activity that was engaging and beneficial to help trainees review before exams.
Solution:
I had already created a template of this activity, called Quiz Time, during my time in the educational technology graduate program as a project for one of my courses. It is a “Jeopardy” style activity that focuses on gamification of content. I told the foundational trainers that I had this project made as a template, and that all I needed was to input content. We started with one foundational training module and decided to pilot the activity with a class of trainees.
Process:
Since I already had the activity template created, the next step in the process was to input new content into the activity file. I examined the Module 6 foundational training PowerPoint presentation, which covered service credit purchases. I broke the content down into five categories with five questions and answers for each category. I typed these into a Word document and sent it to the SMEs for review. Once I got feedback on the questions, I made appropriate edits and plugged them into the Storyline template.
Outcome:
Once the activity was piloted, we asked trainees to give feedback on the activity. Feedback was obtained using Microsoft Forms. Most participants enjoyed the activity, found it engaging and helpful, and many stated how it helped them feel more prepared for end of unit exams. All ten modules have since been created and are used frequently in our foundational training classes.
