Opportunity:
A refresher course on a complex and difficult concept for many employees to grasp was needed for my department. An instructor-led training was already created and implemented, but leadership decided a self-paced module would be useful as a follow up to that face-to-face training.
Solution:
My team decided to create an e-Learn that covered the instructor-led training presentation and showcased the content in a variety of learning experiences. For one section, we settled on creating a video as a great method to explain the concept.
Process:
My team highlighted a couple of slides within the presentation that explained the concept and decided those would be the foundation for our video. We created the video using Camtasia, making sure to use callout boxes to bring attention to important information. We also worked with the creator of the presentation and used her as our voice over talent. This meant creating a voice over script and utilizing an advanced microphone for recording. After the video was completed, I used YouTube to generate captions for accessibility.
Outcome:
We include satisfaction surveys at the end of each of our e-Learning modules. Learners ranked the course a 3.7 out of 4 stars for “balance of learning experiences (reading, interactivity, viewing, etc.)”. On the additional comments, many learners remarked that they learn best by viewing information and that they found the video to be very helpful in their understanding of the concept. Overall, they ranked their engagement within the course 3.5 out of 4 stars, which was an increase from previous courses that did not include videos.
